Directorate of Publicity and Public Relations, Customs and Central Excise which was earlier known as Directorate of Publications, Customs and Central Excise was established in May,1979 as an independent Wing of the Directorate of Statistics and Intelligence, Customs and Central Excise.
With a view of enabling the Directorate of Publications to discharge the functions assigned to it, the entire existing staff in the Departmental Printing Press then under the control of Directorate of Statistics & Intelligence, Customs and Central Excise was diverted to the newly created Directorate. Similarly, the staff, which was then engaged in work relating to publications in the Directorate of Inspection and Audit, Customs and Central Excise was also transferred to the Directorate of Publications.
Directorate of Publicity and Public Relations (DPPR) is an attached office of Central Board of Excise and Customs, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, New Delhi. The Directorate is situated at Central Revenue Building, I.P. Estate, New Delhi. The Directorate is headed by a Commissioner who is assisted by two Additional/Joint Commissioner and their Deputy/Assistant Commissioners. The Directorate has no Zonal/Regional Offices.
The Directorate is primarily engaged in catering to publicity needs of Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax Departments which is mainly achieved through advertisements in print media, electronic media and outdoor advertisements. The other important function of the Directorate is publication of books, manuals telephone directory (Sampark) and calendar for use of departmental officers.
The Directorate is also the nodal office for implementation of Citizen’s Charter and Public Grievances.
